Stage 3: Building Your Gateway
Building Your Gateway
The gateway in a network built on the LoRaWAN® protocol is responsible for receiving LoRa® messages from your end node and relaying those messages to the network server. The gateway is also used to broadcast downlink messages from the server to the end node.
In this stage, you build your own gateway, which complies with the LoRaWAN specification, using a Raspberry Pi and a Gateway HAT. You then connect this gateway to the ChirpStack network server you deployed in the previous stage.
It is possible to buy a gateway off the shelf and configure it to connect to an instance of the ChirpStack network server. Choose one that supports ChirpStack. You can check the current manufacturers which are supported, and see documentation on connecting these gateways, on the ChirpStack website.
