Module 4: Advanced Assignments

LoRa uses an RF modulation technique which allows long-range, low powered wireless communication.

LoRaWAN is a low power, wide-area networking protocol based on an open-source specification that allows for compatibility of devices with LoRa chipsets across many different hardware manufacturers around the world.

To solidify your understanding of the LoRaWAN architecture, we suggest that you work through the How to Build and Deploy a Network Using the LoRaWAN Protocol hands-on lab. This lab provides a step-by-step walk-through that shows how to deploy an end device on a LoRaWAN network, from end-to-end.  To complete this lab, you will need to obtain the required hardware, which is available off-the-shelf.

Upon completing the lab, you will know how to:

  • Configure an Arduino-based end-node using LoRa modulation to broadcast payloads containing a moisture reading
  • Build a gateway with LoRa functionality using a Raspberry Pi and the Pi Supply gateway HAT featuring LoRa chipsets)
  • Deploy a network server instance (leveraging the LoRaWAN standard) both locally and in the cloud
  • Set up an integration with ThingsBoard to display the moisture reading on a dashboard
